How to Put on a Bra

Updated: Oct 16

Are you possibly thinking that this article couldn’t apply to you? After all, you know how to put on a bra. You’ve been doing it for decades. However, before you click away, why not take a moment to scan through this article to be sure you’re doing it right?

Making sure you put on your bra the right way is crucial to getting it to fit correctly, so it gives you the lift and support you need.

Here are two ways you can put on a bra, so it fits you correctly.

Option #1: Putting your Bra on Behind Your Back

In general, a bra fitting guide will recommend this first method for putting on your bra.

Step 1: Place the bra against your stomach with the cups facing outward

Step 2: Bring the two sides of the bra together at your back

Step 3: If the bra is relatively new or tight, clasp your bra on the first hook. If there is some stretch to the bra, clasp it on the second hook and if there’s a lot of give to your bra, clasp it on the third hook.

Step 4: Put your arms through the straps and gently pull the bra over your breasts.

Step 5: Bend forward slightly and gently arrange your breasts, so they’re resting completely within the cups. Smooth any tissue from the center of your chest into the cups.

Option #2: Putting your Bra on In Front

Not everyone has the range of motion or flexibility to tie their bra behind their back. Therefore, we recommend first fastening the bra with the clasps in front of you and then turning it around, so the clasps are at the back. Here’s how:

Step 1: Place the bra with the cups facing outward against your back, the clasps in front of you on your stomach. The cups should be “up” and not “down.” If the cups are pointing down, you could twist the wires when you turn the bra.

Step 2: If the bra is relatively new or tight, clasp your bra on the first hook. If there is some stretch to the bra, clasp it on the second hook and if there’s a lot of give to your bra, clasp it on the third hook.

Step 3: Gently turn the bra so the cups are in front of you and the clasp is at the back.

If you struggle to turn the bra, consider placing a scarf under the bra, so it moves more easily.

Step 4: Put your arms through the straps and gently pull the bra over your breasts.

Step 5: Bend forward slightly and gently arrange your breasts, so they’re resting completely within the cups. Smooth any tissue from the center of your chest into the cups.
