Our bodies are not symmetrical. This is just a fact. Whether it’s our arms, our legs, our feet, they never match up perfectly. Sometimes the difference is subtle and other times, it’s more prominent. The same can be said for our breasts.
Most people have asymmetrical breasts. Sometimes it’s a difference in size, sometimes it’s a difference in shape, sometimes it’s both. Our breasts are sisters, not twins. Why?
One reason for our sister breasts is due to genetics. If your mother and grandmother had asymmetrical breasts then there’s a good chance you’ll have them too. Another reason is the organic makeup of our breasts. Breasts are partially composed of fat and therefore, their size can be affected by changes in our weight.
When a person loses weight, it usually doesn’t happen evenly. As a result, when our weight fluctuates it can increase or decrease the size of one of our breasts over the other.
Less common reasons for uneven breasts are skeletal or medical conditions such as a curvature of the spine, scoliosis, and defects in the chest wall.
How to Shop for Bras When Your Breasts are Uneven
The size difference between your breasts will determine what bras you’ll need to shop for. In general, the rule is that you want to have enough material in the cup of the bra to cover the larger breast, without drowning the smaller one in fabric.
Let’s look at some examples.
If there’s only a slight difference in breast size, you can usually get away with increasing the cup size. So, if you measure at a 36I US (36G UK), but your right breast bubbles over the cup, you should try a 36J US (36GG UK).
If going up a cup size leaves the smaller breast with too much fabric, you should consider a different style of bra. To find the style that may work for you, you need to look at where the top of the cup is pressing against the flesh of the larger breast and causing it to spill over.
For example, you may want to look at different shaped cups.
A bra with tear drop shaped cups is characterised by having more fabric on the bottom than on the top and generally has less material towards the centre. This might be a good shape for you if your bigger breast is fuller on the bottom than on the top, but you still have some fullness at the top of your breast that needs coverage. This is because the material of the cup will cling to your chest, covering the larger breast without drowning the smaller one in fabric.
Here are a few of the bras we sell with tear drop shaped cups:
A balcony bra has a tear drop shaped cup with added material towards the centre. However, unlike a full coverage bra, the neckline is lower. As such, the smaller breast won’t be as drowned in material if you have round breasts or breasts that are fuller on the top.

Alternatively, you can try a moulded cup bra. This type of bra is really good for masking the difference in breast size. This is because a moulded bra has its own shape, whereas a soft cup bra requires that your breast make the shape. As such, the difference in breast size is not so apparent when you’re wearing a moulded bra. Your smaller breast will probably have extra space in the cup, which is fine, and it should not be noticeable under your clothes.
